The origin of the phrase "boogie-woogie" can be interpreted in many ways. African terms such as "boog," "booga," "bogi," and "mbuki mvuki" all, in some form, mean to dance or play music in a wild, energetic manner. According to "Cow Cow" Davenport, one of the early users of the phrase, "boogie" originated in house rent parties and barrelhouses, referring to the bogeyman or Devil, linking the term to the tradition of calling blues music the "Devil's music."
Clarence "Pinetop" Smith is often regarded as the key originator of the boogie-woogie solo style of blues piano. After performing in vaudeville, sometimes alongside Davenport in Pittsburgh, PA, Davenport encouraged Smith around 1927 to move north to Chicago, IL, where his music would reach a larger audience.
After relocating with his son and wife, Davenport recommended Smith to Mayo Williams, a race record producer, who brought Smith in to record for Vocalion. Following a series of recording sessions—including one with Smith's own hokum jug band, although these recordings were never released—the success of Smith's music encouraged Vocalion to continue working with him.
A fifth recording session was scheduled for March 16, 1929. The day before this session, Smith became involved in a shootout at a Chicago nightclub where he was performing. Allegedly caught in the crossfire, Smith was shot by a man named David Bell, coughed up blood, and collapsed. He died at the age of 24.
In 1943, Brunswick reissued two of Smith's recordings from his December 29, 1928 session. These recordings were included in the Brunswick album release B-1002.
This included:
DISC 1:
A - Pinetop's Boogie Woogie
B - Pinetop's Blues
DISC 2:
A - Jump Steady Blues
B - I'm Sober Now.
I only have disc one, which makes me very sad. Everybody boogie woogie. Everybody mess around.
Recorded on December 29, 1928, in Chicago, IL.
Released as Vocalion 1245. Re-issued on Brunswick Album No. B-1002, as Brunswick 80008.
Transferred at 78.3 RPM.
