Alexander the Great – Destruction of Thebes
Scene 1: The Revolt of Thebes
a) While Alexander was campaigning in the north, unrest brewed in Greece. A bustling city square in Thebes where citizens gather.
b) Encouraged by Athenian support, Thebes rose in rebellion, Theban leaders stand on an elevated platform, rallying the people to arms c)Seeking to break free from Macedonian rule, Athenian emissaries are seen conversing with Theban generals in the background.
d)Other Greek cities hesitated, but Thebes resolved to fight, raising its banners in defiance of Alexander’s reign. The mood is tense, filled with determination and defiance.
Scene 2: Alexander’s Response
a)News of the Theban revolt reached Alexander quickly. Alexander, clad in full battle armor, leads a vast army southward,
b) His cavalry charges ahead, dust rising behind them. Without hesitation, he led his army south at remarkable speed.
) The Macedonian phalanx marches in perfect formation, shields gleaming under the sun. His arrival struck fear into the hearts of the hesitant Greek city-states.
d) Thebes, visible in the distance, stands fortified, however, refused to back down, preparing and ready for battle.
Scene 3: The Siege of Thebes
a) Thebes under siege. They fought bravely, but their resistance was ineffective against Alexander’s superior military tactics.
b) Macedonian catapults launch projectiles against the city walls. His forces besieged the city, breaking through its walls and storming the streets.
c) Theban warriors, armed with spears and shields, attempt to hold their defenses.
d) Alexander, on horseback, observes the battle, directing his forces with precise commands. Though the Theban warriors fought desperately, but the Macedonian army was relentless.
Scene 4: The Fall of Thebes
a) The city of Thebes fell, its resistance shattered. Smoke and fire rise from the ruins of Thebes
b) Macedonian soldiers march through the devastated streets, securing the city. In a decisive move, Alexander ordered its destruction.
c) The city was razed, its people, the Theban civilians, captured and in despair, are led away as prisoners. either slain or enslaved
d) Thebes, once a mighty power in Greece, was no more. Its lands were divided among the other Boeotian cities. In the foreground, Alexander surveys the destruction, his expression unreadable.
Scene 5: Aftermath and Athens’ Submission
a) In Athens, a gathering of Greek leaders in a grand hall. The fall of Thebes sent shockwaves amongst them as well as across Greece.
b) Their faces show fear as they receive word of Thebes’ destruction. Athens, realizing the futility of resistance, chose submission.
c) A Macedonian envoy stands before them, delivering Alexander’s terms. Temporarily, all of Greece was at peace.
d) Meanwhile, in Pella, Alexander appointed Antipater, his regent, oversees the governance of Greece. With his rule now undisputed, Alexander set his sights eastward and prepared for his grand campaign into Asia.
