Carcharodontosaurus (name meaning "Jagged-Toothed Lizard") is a genus of carcharodontosaurid dinosaur that originated during the Middle Cretaceous period in what is now Africa. One of the largest theropod dinosaurs ever known, Carcharodontosaurus is recognizable for its teeth, which strongly resemble the teeth of a great white shark.
A close relative of both Acrocanthosaurus of North America and Giganotosaurus of South America, Carcharodontosaurus is distinguished by its three-fingered hands, elongated snout, and an assortment of spikes located along its back and head. In comparison to Giganotosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus (while similar in build) was a little smaller and had a narrower profile with a snout that tapers to a point.
Its huge jaws are equipped with long, serrated, razor-sharp teeth that strongly resemble the teeth of a great white shark, hence its name. Carcharodontosaurus was among the apex predators of its time. Its only rival at the time – save for other Carcharodontosaurus – was the sail-back crocodile-like theropod dinosaur Spinosaurus.
Like some carnivores, Carcharodontosaurus hunted in pairs, which enabled it to hunt large herbivores. Armed with cunning and blade-like serrated teeth, these carnivores struck at will with deadly force.
