Postal Voting Made Simple: Apply Early, Return Promptly
For the 2026 State Election you can consider postal voting if you meet eligibility criteria.
Let’s check what that means. Let’s look at who can apply online for postal voting so that, if eligible, you can have your ballot papers printed and mailed to your nominated postal address in a timely manner.
If you’re unable to attend a voting centre in person, you can apply for a postal vote, if you
• are more than 8 km from a polling booth
• you are travelling
• you are ill, infirm or disabled or are caring for someone who is ill, infirm or disabled – preventing you from attending a polling booth
• or are due to give birth shortly.
You are also eligible if you
• or you have religious beliefs - preventing you from attending a polling booth,
• you are working and unable to leave your workplace to vote
• or are a resident of a declared institution being a hospital, convalescent home, nursing home, home for the aged, hostel for the aged or infirm, prison or other places of confinement
• or have your address suppressed on the electoral roll (a silent elector).
Additionally, you are eligible if you are subject to a direction under the Emergency Management Act 2004 requiring you to quarantine or isolate during the hours of polling.
Online postal applications close Friday 13 March for interstaters and the 17 March for those in South Australia.
Voters will have the convenience of applying for a postal vote online, via the new Postal Vote Application Portal or by calling the ECSA call centre 1300 655 232.
Postal voting packs will be distributed from March 10 once candidates are declared and ballot papers are printed.
To make your vote count, fill out your ballot papers and make sure you have a witness to watch you sign the declaration envelope enclosed before 6pm (South Australian time) on polling day, 21 March 2026.
Once completed, place your declaration inside the reply paid envelope and drop it in your nearest post box.
