A Deal Behind Closed Doors Picked the President

Congress formed a special electoral commission to resolve the dispute. In a secret compromise, Democrats agreed to concede the presidency to Hayes if Republicans withdrew federal troops from the South, effectively ending Reconstruction.

This backroom deal—known as the Compromise of 1877—marked a turning point in American race relations. Black voters lost protections, and the South returned to white-dominated rule for decades.
