Domee Shi, la productora de la película explicó a Billboard Japón que para la creación del grupo, sus creadores se inspiraron en bandas musicales reales que tuvieron lugar en la década de los 90s y la de los 2000s, bandas tanto americanas como asiáticas, unas de ellas son Big Bang y 2PM, así como también Backstreet Boys, N'SYNC, 98 Degrees, B2K, O-Town y Domee habló para el sitio Thrillist que decidió agregar 4*Town a la trama de la película para poder hacer un chiste que la mamá de la protagonista hizo, preguntando entre sus diálogos "¿Por qué lo llaman 4*Town si son cinco?", y que sorpresivamente se mantuvo la idea de justificarlos dentro de la historia.
