Time is running out for Ohio school districts hoping to renew or pass emergency levies that generate funding to keep schools operating.
State lawmakers recently overrode Gov. Mike DeWine's veto on a measure banning this type of school levy. That means the election this Nov. 4 is the final opportunity for districts like Garfield Heights City Schools to renew theirs.
The district has made progress, improving from two to three stars on the latest state report card — meaning the district now meets state standards.
"What we want to do is just maintain those things," Superintendent Dr. Richard Reynolds told 3News.
But Reynolds says that progress could be at risk if voters don’t approve the levy renewal.
"If we are unable to receive the funding, we're looking at closing two of our buildings, also losing 20 teachers and 10 of our support staff members," he stated. "Some of our programs will then have to either go away or we need to make some adjustments."
The district released a letter last month outlining potential reductions.
If voters say yes on Issue 48, school officials stress their taxes will not increase. The measure combines two existing emergency levies that have been in place for decades, and together, they generate about $5.3 million a year for the district.
