Noun class in Swahili is a group of nouns with similar grammatical characteristics.
Noun classes affect the grammatical aspects of a sentence in Swahili that is adjectives, demonstratives, verbs and modifiers (such as “the thing that”).
Nouns in Kiswahili are grouped into various noun classes because of two main reasons: 1. Their characteristics as a noun 2. Kiswahili’s vowel harmony
There are 9 noun classes in Kiswahili. Each noun class has both a singular and a plural form, to make 18 total.
In this lesson we will talk about the class M-WA[A-WA]
1).Ngeli ya M-WA [A-WA] (Noun Class of M-WA)
♦This noun class includes all the animate creatures.That is: human beings, animals, birds, and insects.
★Most nouns in this category start with the prefix “M-” in singular form and “WA-" in plural form.
Some starts with the prefix “Mw-" in singular form and “Wa-" in plural form.
★Other nouns that may not start with the above format but are animate creatures falls in this category.
