In September 2025 I swapped out the T50 transmission in my 1980 TE72 Corolla for a W58 transmission from an 85 Celica.
I love this swap because the transmission should never break behind the built 3TC engine I have, and because of the much higher 5th gear this brought my freeway cruising rpm down by 3-500rpm.
I noticed over 3 months of use that the clutch would start to feel more grabby, and sometimes shudder when I had been driving for a while. Turns out the extended throw out bearing hub from the SQ Engineering swap kit I bought was just a little too long in my application, and needed some machine work.
Now, in late December 2025, 2 weeks after removing the transmission again and milling down that hub, the car has been driving perfectly.
So checking that hub clearance as I show in this video, is critical for anyone else doing this swap.
This video is not at all meant to rip on SQ Engineering, their t50 to w58 kit was amazing overall and very well made. Money very well spent IMO!
They actively disclaim that it’s meant for AE86 platforms with the 4AGE engine. So I assume the 3TC bellhousing is just enough different to have caused this issue. My only knock, is that I didn’t think to check this pinch-point right away myself!
