Each year, Soldiers with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit lead the Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) at Camp Perry, Ohio, as part of the National Matches for the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
Participants learn fundamental marksmanship techniques, competition basics, and most importantly, firearm safety. With basic and advanced classes offered, SAFS is suited for those just beginning in marksmanship as well as those who want to improve the skills on the firing line.
SAFS was first taught by the Department of Defense in 1918, and for decades now, the USAMU has provided the classroom instruction and run the SAFS range with the assistance of servicemembers and CMP marksmen.
