Many of us are aware of the increasing utilization of digital breast tomosynthesis for mammographic evaluation, but other uses of the technology are not as well developed or utilized. In their article from Tokyo Women’s Medical University, Dr. Haruhiko Machida and colleagues review the physics underlying digital tomosynthesis and discuss some of the current clinical applications including evaluation of the paranasal sinuses, chest, breast, skeletal system, abdomen, and in the emergency room setting. Any radiologist or physicist with access to or with plans to implement digital tomosynthesis in their practice will find the article of interest. Dr. Andrew Maidment of the University of Pennsylvania who has published on this topic and is the Assistant Chair of the Imaging Physics section of RadioGraphics provides expert commentary on the article. See Machina et al, RadioGraphics 2016;36:735-750 and Maidment, RadioGraphics 2016;36:750-752.
