Everett Lawson is a research assistant at MIT Media Lab working in biomechatronics, where biology, robotics, and neural engineering converge. After undergoing an experimental amputation, he didn’t just become a subject of research — he became a co-creator, helping design and refine his own bionic leg.
Using sensors that read his muscle signals, Lawson’s prosthesis responds directly to his nervous system rather than relying on preset robotic commands. This work is part of a broader effort by MIT’s Biomechatronics Group and the K. Lisa Yang Center for Bionics to build prosthetics that restore natural movement and sensation.
At the core is the agonist-antagonist myoneural interface (AMI), a surgical approach that preserves muscle communication and proprioception, enabling real-time neural control. Together, Lawson’s experience and research point toward a future of true human-robot integration.
