Amending and Considering the City of Columbus Operating Budget
Columbus City Council will take a final vote to amend and accept the 2026 Operating Budget. The following amendments to Ordinance 2938-2025 are sponsored by both Council President Shannon G. Hardin and Councilmember Nicholas J. Bankston.
• $7.2 million addition for the Community Shelter Board
• $3 million addition for the City’s 27th pay period
• $1 million addition to the City’s Elevate Grant program
• $1.8 million addition for Primary One
• $1.2 million restoration for the Municipal Court Clerk
• $700K restoration for the Municipal Court Judges
• Reappropriating 850K to support the city’s youth summer camps.
• $5.4 million addition for ongoing joint Council and Administration programming in areas such as workforce development, public safety, housing and others.
Budget amendments seek to balance the City’s immediate needs with long-term financial responsibility. These amendments build on the Mayor’s proposed budget by strengthening investments in key areas to more effectively address the City’s evolving needs.
Honoring Local Inventor and Engineer
Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla is sponsoring Ordinance 0292-2026, which would rename the roadway currently known as Washington Boulevard to “Granville T Woods Boulevard” in honor of the late Granville T. Woods. Woods was born in Columbus on April 23, 1856. He became one of the most groundbreaking inventors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Woods is remembered for his significant impact on urban and rural transportation as an electrical engineer and for his nearly 60 patents.
Addressing Alternative Crisis Response
Columbus City Council will consider the advancement of the Columbus Safety Collective’s proposed charter amendment to expand alternative crisis response programs in the city, working together to authorize the amendment and place it on the ballot for Columbus voters.
The proposed amendment seeks to create a specialized 911 response system to improve efficiency in providing accurate resources in emergencies, freeing up police, firefighters and EMS personnel to focus their resources. If passed, it would then be placed on the May 2026 ballot.
