SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) - A special show to say "goodbye" to legendary Action News anchorman Bill Bonds and celebrate his remarkable career.
The tribute showcases the amazing impact Bill had on the people and the city of Detroit.
Bill Bonds, a broadcasting legend who made his name at WXYZ-TV Channel 7, died on Saturday, December 13. The longtime anchorman passed away Saturday after suffering a heart attack. He was 82.
Bonds started at WXYZ-TV in 1963 and worked at the station until 1968. He returned three years later in 1971, working until his retirement in 1995.
Bonds was one of the reasons WXYZ dominated the ratings throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s and up into the millennium.
But it was Bonds' coverage of the 1967 Detroit riots that made Channel 7 the station to watch in the area.
He was such a force, that ABC would even move Bonds to New York and Los Angeles to help boost the stations in those cities.
Just last June, Bonds was awarded one of the industry's top honors. The Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented him with the Governor's Award. It was in recognition of Bonds' 25-year career at WXYZ. He has also won the NATAS Silver Circle Award.
