It’s estimated there are over 3 million informal waste pickers in India, searching landfill sites and waste containers for recyclables. India is also one of the first governments to issue a ban on single-use plastics, in an effort to put an end to waste pollution.
Abhay Deshpande, and the team at Recykal have created a digital marketplace for managed waste commerce, using open-source Google AI, that supports the livelihood of waste workers and rewards households across India for better recycling.
