A rant about how I couldn't listen to a SACD on $14,000 of audio equipment. The SACD format is intentionally crippled by Sony because they assume you can't be trusted with the digital stream.
Clarifications (since I'm getting a lot of confused viewers):
1. Sony intentionally cripples the digital SPDIF output on SACDs. It is either muted, as it is with the Marantz SACD player I'm using here, or it is downsampled to 48/44.1kHz before streaming. Sony does not allow access to the full digital stream -- It is this point that I'm ranting on: That Sony assumes you are a PIRATE by doing this.
2. These speakers started out as Meridien D6000's, but were upgraded to DSP6000's later (this is not uncommon for Meridien) - They were actually valued at $20k in 1993 dollars.
3. These speakers ONLY have a SPDIF input that can go to 192kHz/24bit. No analog input is provided, no other digital input is provided.
4. To my knowledge, Meridien does not have a SACD player. You have to use a separate SACD player and convert from one stream to another. And, No, I'm not taking the analog output from the SACD player so I can convert it to digital SPDIF only to have it converted back to analog again in the speakers. That's ludicrous!
5. Yes, I am also infinitely annoyed that Meridien did not provide an analog input. After all, they have to convert to analog to play through the speakers! But they are British, after all.
6. Haha, I didn't spend a DIME on these speakers because, actually, my friend bought them. He just loves them. I'm really more of an analog person myself. Analog never goes out of style.
