Special Report: Bank Strike Alert! 4 Days Banking Services May Remain Closed in Late January

Under the banner of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), bank employee unions have announced a nationwide strike on January 27, 2026, demanding the implementation of a five-day working week for banks.

The situation becomes more critical as the strike comes right after a series of holidays:
• January 24 – Fourth Saturday
• January 25 – Sunday
• January 26 – Republic Day

If the strike goes ahead on January 27, banking operations in public sector banks may remain affected for four straight days, causing inconvenience to customers.

UFBU states that banks are ready to work 40 extra minutes per day from Monday to Friday, without reducing total working hours, similar to institutions like RBI, LIC, GIC, stock exchanges, and government offices that already follow a five-day workweek.
