Reflexology is the study of reflexes. Reflex(ology) therapy is the method of applying calculated pressure on these reflexes in order to activate the natural healing process. Reflexes are found throughout the body; this can be in relation to meridian points, origin and insertion, referral areas or mapped out reflections of internal organs, parts and glands of the body. Professional reflex therapy is a natural healing art performed by those who can read and interpret these reflexes by way of reported client sensations in the body as well as tenderness in the local area of the reflex, when palpated by the therapist. A reflexology therapist deciphers the tenderness of specific reflexes for each client, in the moment, to give a deeper meaning about what is going on inside of their body. A reflexology treatment can provide the groundwork for remarkable healing. Gentle massage movements in a relaxation style bring the client to a state of calm and through precise therapeutic stimulations, the magic of multi-reflex-therapy really comes to life.
Being able to interpret the tenderness and improvements of your client is key to having a successful practice. When a point is tender on the surface of the skin, we say there is stagnation of Qi or a lack of Qi behind the point. The degree of tenderness would then indicate the level of stagnation. Advanced therapists look at the most tender points and quickly put a snap shot together of what is going on inside of the body. Then through hands-on work, a customized treatment is delivered. It can also be as easy as, “…if its tender, work it out” Eunice Ingham, the mother of reflexology.
It is ideal in one session, to have tenderness behind the point subside and improvement of acute symptoms of at least 50% (described by client testing). Anything below this improvement percentage, the therapist can recommend another treatment within 48-72 hours. This is because we want to continue the healing process and get the body back online. If 80% improvement is achieved from the session, it is recommended that we stop working on that symptom during this treatment, in order to prevent the symptom from flipping over into the opposite expression (yang vs yin indications). Let the clients body take the healing the rest of the way. With reflex therapy, I have found that 3-4 treatments done on a weekly basis, is a good general rule of thumb for the best results when starting a treatment plan.
