Bengal Election 2026: Nine Arrested After BJP TMC Clash In Kolkata | West Bengal Election 2026
Clashes in Kolkata: Violent skirmishes erupted between BJP and TMC workers on Monday during the final stretch of campaigning for the West Bengal Assembly elections. The confrontation took place on Hossain Shah Road in the Kolkata Port constituency after supporters of BJP candidate Rakesh Singh and Trinamool Congress members engaged in aggressive slogan-shouting. According to local police, the situation quickly escalated into physical violence, resulting in several injuries and the registration of three separate FIRs.
Nine Arrested Following Violence: Law enforcement moved swiftly to contain the unrest, arresting five BJP workers and four TMC members in connection with the clashes. Deputy Commissioner of Police Harikrishna Pai confirmed that the arrests were made to prevent further escalation as the state approaches the first phase of polling on April 23. The incident has heightened security concerns in the capital, prompting additional deployments of central forces to sensitive zones across the city.
EC's Strict New Restrictions: In direct response to the rising political friction, the Election Commission (EC) has announced stringent new travel restrictions to maintain order. Starting two days before polling, motorcycles will be banned from roads between 6 pm and 6 am, and pillion riders will be prohibited during daylight hours except for medical emergencies. Additionally, a 96-hour liquor ban has been implemented across the state ahead of Thursday’s vote to curb the potential for alcohol-fueled poll violence.
High Court Intervention Sought: Amidst the crackdown, the Trinamool Congress has moved the High Court, raising concerns that the EC's list of nearly 1,000 "troublemakers" could be used to target and arrest party workers unfairly before they can cast their votes. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee argued that these preemptive arrests could disenfranchise supporters. With the campaign for the first phase concluding this Tuesday, the political atmosphere remains electric as the state prepares for a two-phase showdown on April 23 and April 29.
