With West Coast Railways providing the traction, it came as little surprise that the S&C Steam Special ended up being worked by a pair of 57s. I nearly gave it a miss but was happy to meet many friends, both young and old - including one whom I haven't seen for a long time - and an abundance of freight traffic.
According to a member of the train's crew, only 148 of the 248 seats available were in use. Given the history of diesels substituting for steam in recent months, these figures are bound to get worse.
