american 191 was a passenger flight from o'hare International Airport in chicago to los angeles international. On the afternoon of May 25, 1979, the dc-10 operating this flight was taking off from runway 32r when its left engine detached from the wing, causing slats to retract, leading to a loss of control. The aircraft crashed about 1 km from the end of runway . All 271 occupants on board were unalived on impact, along with 2 people on the ground. With a total of 273 deaths, the disaster is the deadliest aviation accident to have occurred in usa.
