Here, we have a raaga alapana in the Ragam Shanmukhapriya by Vid. J. B. Sruthi Sagar, with Vid. V. S. Gokul on the Violin.

In layman terms, Raga Alapana is the primary format for introducing and developing a Raga in Indian Classical music. It is a means to communicate to the audience, the flavor or the bhAva of the rAga through the permitted notes and its phrases.An alapana, is the exposition of a raaga or tone – a slow improvisation with no rhythm. Althought the usage of "aakaram" is eminent in an alapana, certain phrases are spelled out, such as "tha dha ri na".
A Raga can be defined as a musical scale with a recognisable musical framework. Within this framework, a performer can attempt to improvise and develop the Raga through a musical performance.
