From the Hasmonean era to Byzantine times, we’ll trace the story of Jewish settlement in the Golan using Josephus, rabbinic writings, and archaeological finds. Along the way, we’ll look at how dramatic events like the Great Revolt and even earthquakes shaped life in the region.
Jewish life in the Golan during the Roman and Byzantine periods is a fascinating yet still little-known chapter in the story of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. In recent years, surprising discoveries—including synagogues, stone vessels, and inscriptions—have revealed just how lively and vibrant Jewish life was in this region, far from the main centers. Archaeological surveys and excavations over the last few decades have changed the picture we once had, showing the Golan as a unique window into the everyday lives of Jews in antiquity.
