A total enthalpy wheel in a 100% OA split DX unit improves energy efficiency by transferring both heat (sensible) and moisture (latent) between the exhaust and supply airstreams. The wheel, made of desiccant material like silica gel, slowly rotates between the two airstreams—adsorbing moisture and heat from the incoming outdoor air and releasing it into the cooler, drier return air. This process pre-conditions the supply air, reducing the workload on the DX unit and cutting energy use. While the system requires maintenance and has a higher upfront cost, the long-term energy savings and compact design make it a smart choice for efficient HVAC operation.
