James Clear, author of the NYT-bestseller Atomic Habits, is an expert in habits. Carl Richards talks to him about making good ones, breaking bad ones, and helping ourselves and our clients get a little bit better every day.
“There is one thing that, since the book has come out, I consider to be even more important than I realized for building habits and getting behavior to stick… the power of the social environment.”
“Each of us is a member of multiple tribes. Sometimes that tribe is large, like ‘what it means to be American.’ Sometimes that tribe is small, like ‘what it means to be a member of your local CrossFit gym.’ Each of those tribes has a set of social norms; a set of shared behaviors and expectations.”
“You might walk outside on Tuesday night and see your neighbor cutting their grass and think, ‘Oh, I need to mow the lawn.’ You may stick to that habit for 30 years. We wish we had that level of consistency with our other habits. Why do you do it? Partially, you do it because it feels good to have a clean lawn. But mostly, it feels good because you don’t want to be judged by the other people in the neighborhood for being the sloppy one.”
“The practical takeaway here is: If you want to build a habit that’s going to last, then you want to join groups where your desired behavior is the normal behavior.”
“We perform behaviors for multiple reasons. Sometimes we perform a habit because of the results that it will get us—it will help us lose weight or make money or whatever—but we also perform those habits because they’re a signal to the people around us that says, ‘Hey, I get it, I belong.’”
