“Ms. Maybelle” runs through the Hill Country man’s dream non-stop — maybe I love her, maybe I hate her… maybe I love her… Lord save me. It’s that push-pull that makes Hill Country blues feel like a spell you can’t step out of.
I got this one straight from R.L. Burnside — and it’s one of the songs closest to my heart. Burnside carried “Miss Maybelle” in multiple eras of his life: you can hear it in those raw early sides later compiled as Mississippi Hill Country Blues (recorded across 1967 and 1982) and you can hear it again on the live Burnside on Burnside record, where Cedric Burnside is on drums and the groove is pure family bloodline. 
When I play it, I can almost hear Cedric in the pocket — that steady, marching, Hill Country heartbeat that makes the whole room move without anybody thinking about it.
