To become a better director of photography, you need to be able to collaborate and convey ideas to your crew. Rather than spending time setting up an elaborate shot on your own, speak with your director and camera team to see if the shot is worth the setup and what's the best way to go about accomplishing it.

A huge often overlooked part of being a great cinematographer is having a detailed shooting plan before getting on set. This means shot lists, storyboards, location scouts and more. While it can be fun to show up on set and feel it out, the best DPs show up with a solid game plan for the shoot.
