From the work of Adrian Wells, this mental exercise illustrates the paradoxical effects of trying to not think about something. It is hard work and the thoughts often rebound more strongly. Imagine you are in a pool. Think of pushing a beachball down underwater. The further you push it down, the harder it pings backs up at you. Same with thoughts.
Similarly, if I were to say to you; "Don't drop that!", the last thing you hear is "Drop that!". So with this practice, we try pushing thoughts away, then in part two, we allow thoughts to drift on past. It's a practice in sitting back and simply observing thoughts as a mental process, and something we can choose to detach from. This skill gives us more peace, frees up mental bandwith and alleviates the sheer mental effort of not thinking about things.
