Ever wondered why both London and Paris have a "Temple" station? Let's go back all the way to the Middle Ages and the time of the crusades to get to the origin of that. I find the story of the Templars so fascinating and just love the fact that you can still find their traces in today's cityscapes, hundreds of years later.

For those who fell asleep early, my recommendation if you want to read up on the Templars is Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum". Their story is narrated in the first section of the book :)

Barth, Reinhard: Die Vermessung der Erde. Die Geschichte der Kartografie von der Papyrusrolle bis zum GPS. (no English edition, from what I can tell)
Chadych, Danielle; Leborgne, Domique: Atlas de Paris. Évolution d'un paysage urbain. (I don't think it's the same book, but there's an English publication by the same authors called "Paris. The Story of a Great City.")

The first map is called the Ebstorf Map.
