This is the first project where I've been so strictly focused on character animation. No backgrounds needed, character designs all completed before I began work, etc.. However, the assignment specifically called for emulating the style of the infamous cutscenes from a certain duo of games, so I tried to take that into account while I worked. Lots of wild close-ups, trying to disregard spatial relationships, having characters talk straight to camera, and somewhat awkward timing were things I focused on.
After getting the audio recordings, I would put together a temp track in Blender with a few sound effects and then create an animatic for approval using Grease Pencil. From there, I'd do rough animation, building up the scene, and then finally I'd export a PNG sequence and take the whole scene into Aseprite for cleanup and color. I really wanted to get that CDI-drawing feel so I purposely limited my final animation in terms of what tools were available, eliminating anti-aliasing and using somewhat limited color palettes. I even turned off the freehand pixel-perfect tool.
I'm probably proudest of Denny's scenes, but the whole project was a blast.
