I jokingly refer to this as a folk song from the turn of the century. I heard Richard Thompson perform this version on Fresh Air with Terry Gross. His deep voice and earnest take on the song certainly takes it in a completely different direction. I saw him perform it as part of his set, and it seems like something he might have written. #coversongs
