Описание: Our Surgery Rotation Experience

“Be patient. In time, even an egg will walk.”

On my first day on-call, I was called in. I arrived an entire 30 minutes late, because the surgery was short. The nurse who called me in hurried past me as I was scrubbing down and informed me of my mistake. I hung my head low and felt my face burn in a mix of embarrassment and disappointment. I had been excited to share with classmates that I was called in-to share that the doctor NEEDED me and that I proved HELPFUL. After the 40-minute drive there, to my dismay, I felt useless for missing the one case they needed me for.

Later, after I shed 5 minutes of tears, a wonderful resident told me that the best thing to do was just to float around the city every day that I was on-call. For COVID reasons, I was afraid to, but I obeyed out of fear that I’d make the same mistake again. If we didn’t have a pandemic, I would have rather stayed at a friend’s place or Airbnb near the hospital for the entire rotation so that I could be responsible. It ended up being okay, because I learned a lot from my time there. However, there were a lot of things I wish someone had told me!
