SMoG DAY APRIL 25, 2018, CHALMERS
The Spatial Morphology Group (SMoG) is engaged in research within the fields of urban morphology, space syntax and design theory. The focus is on the built form and spatial structure of cities and its impact on human everyday behaviour but also on urban processes such as social segregation, local markets and urban ecosystems.
On April 25, 2018, the results of the International laboratory for comparative research in urban form were presented at a full-day event at Chalmers University of Technology. The core objective of this 3-year project was to develop and test consistent and sound methodologies and techniques for measuring central variables of spatial urban form, focusing on the variables Distance, Density and Differentiation, as well as how these could generate analytical urban typologies. Describing and understanding how these spatial variables and typologies influence mobility in cities, as the central driver of urban dynamics, will help us better grasp how urban movement creates conditions for everyday life in cities and in turn how they underpin and structure broader urban processes of social, economic and environmental kinds.
This project was led by SMoG in collaboration with three internationally leading universities: University College London in the UK, University of Technology Delft in the Netherlands and Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden.
The videos offer an overview of the main results (video 1-4), reflections on the work by John Peponis (video 5), linking these findings to the work in the other universities (video 6-7) and a window into the future (video 8-10).
