Project Background:
Join us as we take you through Erizon's comprehensive erosion control and vegetation rehabilitation project along the Antiene Spur (Drayton – Malabar Branch Line). Commissioned by Lycopodium’s rail engineering team, this project addressed critical erosion issues and poor vegetation cover identified during geotechnical inspections.
Project Overview:
In late May, the maintenance closure of the Drayton to Malabar line provided a unique opportunity for our team to safely access and remediate the area. We began with an extensive site assessment, including physical and environmental condition evaluation, soil sampling, and a drone survey. Our soil scientists uncovered challenging soil conditions, including compaction and erosion, necessitating a robust remediation strategy.
Solution:
Our targeted remediation plan focused on improving soil structure and fertility. Key actions included:
Application of liquid calcium (AgCalcium Boost) to displace sodium and enhance soil structure.
Use of fast-germinating seeds within EnviroSoil for effective topsoil replacement.
Supplementation with major and trace elements to rectify nutrient deficiencies.
Deployment of EnviroLoc engineered wood fibre mulch to stabilize slopes until root systems took hold.
Equipment:
To ensure consistent and uniform application, we utilized a fully mine-compliant HydroRig equipped with 4×4 capability, a hydraulic cannon, and a 100m extended hose line. Internal agitators facilitated even mixing of the solution.
Project Scope:
The remediation program was meticulously executed in two phases:
Phase 1: Application of EnviroSoil with trace elements and liquid calcium.
Phase 2: Application of a blended seed mix with EnviroLoc for slope stabilization.
Blended Seed Mix:
We employed a fast-acting dryland cover crop blend along with native Wallaby and Rhodes Grass. This approach ensured quick cover establishment while promoting long-term resilience and soil stabilization.
Challenges:
The project faced a narrow 5-day access window, necessitating the use of our extended hose method due to limited HydroRig cannon usage. This required precise time management and expert navigation of steep, loose access tracks by our skilled team.
Results:
The outcomes speak for themselves. Lycopodium provided positive feedback, praising the excellent coverage, timely execution, and overall collaboration. Early vegetation growth was evident within a month, with significant crop coverage and reduced erosion risks observed in the following months.
