STORYLINE:
A car bomb exploded in a commercial neighbourhood of central Baghdad on Saturday morning, sending up a large plume of black smoke, witnesses said.
The attack apparently targeted a small convoy of SUVs driving through the area, said an Associated Press reporter who arrived at the scene soon after the blast.
The explosion occurred at about 11:10 a.m. (0710 GMT) in Baghdad's Tahrir Square, well known for its shops and a large statue showing several Iraqi soldiers breaking through chains around them.
The U.S. military said it had heard the blast, but had no immediate information about the exact location or cause.
