Maya 9 IN SPACE!!! (VMware Workstation/Windows 7)

Описание: When I was in college, I took acollege course about 3D modelling. Maya was used as the 3D modeler. With virtualization, it was now time to relive my experiences, which is ironic as the VM that I'm using is actually higher-spec than the workstation that was used back in the day. That machine was a Dell Precision workstation with a then new Intel Dual-Core processor and graphics acceleration (look, it was 2006, I don't remember the hardware specs beyond that). There was a 20 inch 4:3 LCD monitor running at 1280 by 1024. Yet, modern virtual machines could easily surpass that, like the case here with 4 cores allocated along with 6GB's of RAM. Maya 9 is going to need huge chunks of that memory.

For this scene, I went for something quick-and-dirty, at least by 3D modelling standards. NASA had made the 3D models for the ISS available, and with plenty of Earth textures available, putting one of these scenes together would be really quick, but also really demonstrate both the capabilities of Maya along those of the virtualized workstation. We're going for power here. Loading up really massive Earth and sky texture map is the name of the game here. If this workstation has 6GB's, we're going to push it to its limit.

Of course, it's not 3D modeling unless we get plenty of that ray-tracing action as well. It's time to push those cores to their limit. With raytracing, one can create realistic lighting using mathematical calculations which produces shadows, light reflections and refractions that the most life-like scenes. Amazing tech indeed.

VMware is virtualizing a x64 workstation with 4 cores allocated to it, 6 GB's of RAM, along with a VESA Compatible display adapter with 3D passthrough enabled. Windows is running at the screen resolution of 1920 by 1080, 32-bit color depth. Aero is enabled. There is a High-Definition Audio device installed, along with an Intel PRO/1000 MT Ethernet Adapter. Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 x86 Edition.
