On February 12, 1988, during the late Cold War, U.S. Navy warships USS Yorktown (CG-48) and USS Caron (DD-970) deliberately entered Soviet territorial waters in the Black Sea to assert the right of “innocent passage” under international maritime law. The Soviet Union rejected the move and responded not with gunfire, but with forceful maneuvering. The frigate SKR-6 rammed Yorktown, while Bezzavetny struck Caron, causing minor damage but no injuries. The brief collision underscored how tense superpower confrontations could become - even without shots fired. After the encounter, both sides disengaged, and the incident became a classic example of Cold War brinkmanship conducted at close quarters, where restraint mattered as much as resolve.
