The Guadalupe River Trail traces its roots to decades of flood control efforts and urban revitalization, gradually transforming the river corridor into a recreational escape. Construction of the southern portion began in the late 1970s, with major expansion taking shape throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 2009, the trail earned national recognition when it was designated a National Recreation Trail, solidifying its place as a valued outdoor destination.
Today, the Guadalupe River Trail stretches 11.4 miles of fully paved pathway, winding alongside the river with plans underway to extend it to nearly 20 miles in the future. Recent rainfall had left portions of the trail changed, with low-lying sections submerged under standing water and several areas rendered impassable. Although we weren’t able to complete the entire route, we connected with the Bay Trail and still logged an enjoyable 10-mile ride.
The outing was calm and unhurried, with only light foot traffic along the way. Most of the ride felt effortless as the smooth pavement guided us forward, until the flooded sections forced us to slow down and turn back. Despite the obstacles, the ride remained peaceful and refreshing.
One unexpected highlight was discovering Lupe the Mammoth, a striking public art piece created by artists Freya Bardell and Brian Howe. The sculpture draws inspiration from a real-life discovery in 2005, when a local resident stumbled upon a mammoth tusk while walking his dog — a reminder that beneath the modern trail lies a landscape rich with ancient history.
