Sound #1: “Drink-your-tea!”
The song of an Eastern Towhee is loud and easy to recognize. It sounds like it’s singing, “drink your teeeea!”
The song lasts about 1 second. The “drink” note is sharp and sounds metallic, while the ending “teeeea” is best described as a trill.

The song can vary slightly. For example, you may hear it with extra introductory “drink” notes. Or the “your” note is sometimes missing.

Only males sing the “drink your tea” song.

Sound #2: "chewink" or “towhee” call
The most common call an Eastern Towhee makes is a rising, two-parted “chewink” or “towhee.” This call is made by both males and females.
In fact, this call is how they got their name. Listen closely, and some of the calls sound like it’s saying “towhee.”
The best places to find Eastern Towhees are in shrubby areas on the edges of fields and forests.

Eastern Towhees live in eastern North America. In northern areas, they are only a summer resident during the breeding season.
Have you heard an Eastern Towhee before? If so, where do you live and what type of habitat was it located?

I recorded most of these sounds in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
