💙Jeju’s haenyeo made a historic appearance at the UN FAO headquarters in Rome on October 31 2025, where the Jeju Haenyeo Fisheries System was officially awarded its GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems) certificate.
Led by Vice Governor Kim Ae-sook, six haenyeo and association leaders joined over 3,000 participants from dozens of countries to celebrate this global recognition. The event featured a high-level policy dialogue highlighting the value and preservation of haenyeo culture, a “Voices of GIAHS” talk session with an active Jeju haenyeo, and special exhibitions of traditional diving gear and the bronze Jeju Haenyeo statue at the FAO museum. The ceremony marked a proud moment for Jeju, showcasing the island’s sustainable marine heritage to the world.
