Описание: Craig Rice (1908–1957), born Georgiana Ann Randolph Craig, was an American mystery writer celebrated for blending hard-boiled crime fiction with sharp humor and screwball comedy. Often described as “the Dorothy Parker of detective fiction,” she gained fame in the 1940s with her witty, fast-paced novels featuring the hard-drinking Chicago lawyer John J. Malone and his eccentric companions Jake and Helene Justus, beginning with Eight Faces at Three (1939). Rice’s style combined brisk dialogue, noir atmosphere, and a sardonic take on urban life, setting her apart in a genre dominated by stoic detectives and moral clarity. Her stories often turned the conventions of the mystery inside out—mixing farce, irony, and tragedy in equal measure. INNOCENT BYSTANDER, reviewed here, is a stand-alone that proves she could hold her own in a more traditional side of the mystery genre. (—Steven Rigolosi, November 10, 2025)
