Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a specialized X-ray procedure used to assess female fertility by examining the uterus and fallopian tubes. It helps detect blockages, uterine abnormalities, or other issues that may affect conception. The test is typically performed after menstruation but before ovulation (days 6-12 of the cycle) to avoid interfering with a possible pregnancy. During the procedure, a contrast dye is injected into the uterus through the cervix, and X-ray fluoroscopy captures images to track the dye’s movement. If the fallopian tubes are open, the dye flows freely into the abdominal cavity; if blocked, it stops at the obstruction. The test can also reveal uterine abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, or adhesions. While mild cramping and spotting are common after the procedure, serious complications like infection or allergic reactions are rare. Some women experience a temporary boost in fertility following HSG, possibly due to minor blockages being cleared. The results help guide further fertility treatments if necessary.
