Taking the first step onto the third floor of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM) at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), visitors are introduced to the Modern Art Galleries, displaying works from the early 20th century to the 1920s. This floor, having undergone a transformation by Frank Gehry 3 years prior, stands as the new home for LACMA's Modern Art collection.
Noteworthy among the collections are the Jane and Marc Nathanson Collection and the Janice and Henri Lazarof Collection. The Nathanson Gallery is distinguished by its inclusion of works from artists such as Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Mark Rothko, David Hockney, and more, while the Lazarof collection features exceptional pieces by Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, among others.
Selections from the Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies boast their latest acquisitions for the past 5 years. They provide an in-depth look at German Expressionism through works on paper, including contributions from Die Brücke (The Bridge) artists and their contemporaries like Max Beckmann and George Grosz.
Lastly, the vintage everyday objects at Michael McMillen’s The Garage, now on public view for the first time in nearly 2 decades, were interesting to watch. The installation is located behind two doors on the third level of the BCAM, so if you visit the museum, I recommend securing a reservation first for this unique installation.
