In this video, I’m diving into Michelle Zauner's "Crying in H Mart". You can still watch this video even if you haven't read the book, as I would argue there aren't really any "spoilers" per se.
I start with the punchy and powerful first line "Ever since my mom died, I cry in H Mart" and use it as a springboard to think about food as language, the myth of the mother tongue, and the unique push-and-pull of Asian mother-daughter love.
It's not a plot summary and not a review, but more so a deep dive into passages that stayed with me, and why.
If you're like me and you like to sit with books and unpack them after you've read them: welcome to this corner of the internet 🫶
If you’ve read "Crying in H Mart" I’d love to know: Which parts stayed with you? And has the book affected your relationship to your mom at all?

Hi, I’m Emily. I studied English Literature at Oxford University, and this is my first video! I started this channel because I wanted a space to talk about books in depth with spoilers.
Instead of recommending books, summarising plots or giving star ratings, I want to unpack and sit with the texts. I like to close read passages and understand why something hits hard both from a literary and personal perspective.
