Webinar: LNG: Short-Term Pain, Long-Term Gain?

Описание: The LNG market was already oversupplied before the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, a trend that has triggered low prices and led to supply-contract cancellations and cargo deferments by importing countries. But despite the current headwinds being faced by the LNG industry, there are good reasons to be optimistic about a brighter future.

Firstly, LNG is emerging as a cost-competitive and cleaner transport fuel, for shipping as well as heavy-duty road transport. Secondly, the supply glut and low prices might encourage new countries and companies to start importing LNG, contributing to the industry’s growth. Thirdly, the more extensive air quality regulations and acknowledgment of climate change are expected to encourage gas-importing countries to switch from coal and oil to cleaner natural gas.

Furthermore, gas markets are faring better than oil given the different uses of the fuel and since natural gas is less exposed to the collapse in demand for transportation fuels. In fact, the impact of the pandemic on global gas demand was moderate, with a drop of 2% in Q1 2020, compared to 5% for oil and 8% for coal, according to the International Energy Agency. And while construction has slowed on some projects, Qatar is moving ahead with its plans to expand LNG production capacity from 77 million mt/year to 110 million mt/year by 2025. The country expects to receive commercial bids for its expansion project by October and is on schedule to award contracts by the end of 2020.
