On August 19, 1897, a newspaper reported that Mrs. Tolar and her daughter were hit by a train on top of a railroad trestle in Red Springs, North Carolina. Red Springs is in Hoke and Robeson Counties. The train was inbound from Fayetteville. Other than what was reported in the newspaper (Our Sourthern Home,Livingston, Alabama), I do not know if additional information was printed on the tragedy. There were a great many railroad horrors in the 19th century. Some deaths were of questionable circumstances.
During the 19th century Red Springs was a popular spa and resort. Lumberton, NC, is about 18 miles away. Trivia: Lumberton is the name of the town in the 1986 David Lynch film Blue Velvet. The movie was filmed in Wilmington.
Thank you for watching. Your likes, comments, and subscriptions are appreciated. We recently made a nearly-hour-long documentary of another Victorian-era tragedy - that of the Flag Springs, MO, cornfield murders which you may find interesting.
