What if a painting captured a moment that had not happened yet?
At first, this looks like a simple accident. A crashed car. A man on the ground.
But that man is the painter himself.
In 1936, Alfonso Ponce de León painted this after surviving a real car crash the year before. He called it Self Portrait (Accident).
The unsettling part is not the accident.
It is what happens just a few months later.
