Mobile anti-aircraft units gave armies something fixed gun positions could not: the ability to move their weapons rapidly alongside troops and supply columns.
During WWII, trucks and half-tracks were fitted with anti-aircraft machine guns and autocannons to defend against low-flying aircraft. Their mobility allowed crews to relocate quickly as the battlefield changed.
But mounting weapons, ammunition and crews high above the chassis could make some configurations top-heavy. At speed, rough terrain and sharp turns could become particularly dangerous.
Despite the risks, mobile anti-aircraft vehicles became an important part of battlefield air defence throughout WWII.
