“What Does Equity Look Like in a Building?”
—Dr. Dedy Fauntleroy,
Planning Principal of James Baldwin Elementary School
As a replacement school, James Baldwin Elementary School presented an opportunity for its community, staff, and students to reflect on their shared values and school culture, and to re-envision how a building could be inspirational and restorative for their specific community. The school was shaped by input from educators, parents, and community members, through a collaborative process that prioritized equity and inclusivity.
The two-story school serves a diverse population of the Seattle area. Some of the students attending have been exposed to or experienced homelessness, trauma, food insecurity, and other challenges. Design solutions at James Baldwin Elementary School focus on addressing the needs of its students through promoting a sense of belonging and inspiration. The school's calming, light-filled interiors are complemented by outdoor learning areas and spaces for play and recreation. Natural light and biophilic connections provide visual relief, while quiet nooks and refuge spaces support both academic and emotional well-being. With room for 650 students, James Baldwin Elementary is a safe, welcoming environment where every child can thrive.
