Our tīpuna (ancestors), through generations of keen observation, discovered where to find distinct types of pounamu in the waterways spread along the West Coast of Te Wai Pounamu. They understood the strengths and characteristics of each and their spiritual significance. Each was a taonga, a gift from the whenua (land). In this video, Malcom Cox, a carver from Whaingaroa-Raglan, explains how pounamu is formed and where it can be found.
